Nursing school will be one of the most challenging and exciting endeavors the students will take. They’ll need to learn new skills, study hard and think like a real nurse. However, some may struggle if he/she doesn’t have good study habits, time management skills and proper guidance.
Here are the 10 essential tips to survive nursing school.
1. PREPARE & ORGANIZE
Schedule your time to read and study, make sure to read the material before ahead of time as this will help you understand the material as well as retain it.
2. FIND A STUDY GROUP & MAKE FRIENDS
Studying within a group will help you keep on track and at the same time you will have fun. Also, getting the contact information of your peers is essential as they will also become like family to you.
3. ORGANIZE YOUR TIME
Record and manage all of your exam dates, school events, assignments and personal agenda in an organized planner as these will help you balance between life and school.
Being ready and organizing your scheduled activities is everything in nursing.
4. LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES & ASK QUESTIONS
Everything in nursing school is a learning experience and if you don’t do it, you won’t learn it, and you’ll regret it. Don’t be shy to ask questions, most of the time, someone else also had the same question, it is better to make the mistakes now and not in the real world when you’re already holding a license.
5. COMMUNICATE YOUR WORKLOAD
Communicate with your family, spouse and friends before you start the nursing program to gain their support and understanding especially during your first year. Don’t be afraid to say “no” to social events.
6. STAY INSPIRED & MOTIVATED
Surround yourself with persons that are supportive in achieving your dream to become a professional registered nurse. Search deep inside your heart for the true reason as why you want to become a nurse.
7. BEGIN A SIMPLE MEDITATION
Devoting some time and deliberation to the little things can pay dividends. Studies shows that whether alone or in a group, with a simple meditation like stop, breathe and think will increase your focus and mitigate stress.
8. FIND A MENTOR
Find a mentor such as your senior nursing students, seek help from them because they are more ahead of you in regards to the nursing curriculum. Chances are they know more about what is the right thing to do and what is not.
9. USE YOUR RESOURCES
During nursing school, you will acquire many resources (books, CD’s, websites, ebooks, cheat sheets etc.) to ensure your success. For example, following and joining our community “The Brainy Nurse” will provide you the learning materials and resources you need to help you throughout your nursing career.
10. FIND TIME TO RELAX
It is important not to forget that you still have a life. Exercise, eat a healthy diet and participate in a stress-releasing activities. Oxygen also helps your memory and concentration, so take a break and get some fresh air. Many people have their best state of mind when they are away from their desk, so if you’re really stuck from your studies, just go outside walk and run around the park or just find time to unwind.
“You are not educated. Your certification is in your degree. You may think of it as the ticket to the good life. Let me ask you to think of an alternative. Think of it as your ticket to change the world.”
